Chavurah Shabbat Print E-mail

Shabbat Chavurah

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Sylvia Tucker and my family joined Temple B’nai Shalom in 1985. Four years after that, (and twenty years ago this past May), I and thirteen other temple members celebrated our Adult B’nai Mitzvah. After studying with Rabbi Milgrim for almost a year, we stood up here, on this bema, to lead Shavuot services, read from the Torah and chant Haftorah. It was truly a rewarding experience. It established our identification with Judaism in general, and also created a connection to the generations that had come before us. At that time, many of us, including myself, had children in the Hebrew School and so we also created that connection going forward.

Volunteers Print E-mail
Volunteers provide the ideas and energy that keep our Temple community thriving. There are many different ways a congregant can volunteer:
  • help plan or run an event of your choice
  • help in the Temple office or Religious School office
  • join a standing committee
  • write for the newsletter
  • join the Temple's Green Team and help make building operations more energy efficient
  • be a "buddy" to a new member
  • be a class parent in the Religious School
  • sell SCRIP the 1st and 3rd Sunday in the Rotunda
  • be on the volunteer call list, in case a volunteer is needed
Volunteering is a wonderful way to meet new people. If something in the Temple kindles your interest, and you are considering volunteering, call Lisa Kent. She would love to hear from you.

If you are interested in making a longer-term committment to the Temple, we are looking for leadership in the following areas:
  • Sisterhood
  • Men's Club
  • Youth Group
  • Outreach (programming for inter-faith Temple families)

Caring Community Print E-mail

Caring Community:

There is a warmth and real concern for each other growing at B'nai Shalom. You too can be a part of it by joining our newly forming Caring Community.

We are your fellow member of your "extended family" who would truly like to be there for one another by doing whatever "loving deeds" our schedules permit. Such as; making "caring" phone calls, visiting a hospitalized congregant, preparing or delivering a hot meal for the housebound, sending a thoughtful greeting card, or driving the aged to services, etc.

To find out more, contact Temple office at (732) 251-4300.

College Outreach Print E-mail

College Outreach:

The primary goal of the College Outreach Committee is to maintain the connection between our temple family and our college students while they are away at school. It is important for them to always know that they are part of the Temple B'nai Shalom extended family as they go through the many phases of their lives.

We usually send out several packages each year—during Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah, and Passover. We also try to send out an extra package during the winter/spring semester as a simple pick-me-up. The packages include items related to the holiday, a temple newsletter, practical items related to their studies, food items (very important!), and some things just for fun. Each student receives a magnet with the Rabbi and Cantor's contact information. Also, the Rabbi and Cantor try to put a letter in each package just so our students know they are thinking of them.

There is an annual College Dinner and Shabbat in January during the student's winter break. This dinner has been sponsored by our Men's Club, and allows the students time to have dinner with the clergy and talk. The service that follows has each of the college students who attend participating. It is a spiritual evening that is enjoyed by everyone.

We can provide our current high school students with contact information at the different colleges that our students attend. We are currently trying to create an opportunity our high school students to meet with our college students and ask questions and share information.

Student participation is completely voluntary. Each summer we send out mailings to get updated contact information on our students. Only those who provide us with their information participate in this program. The packages are filled by items donated by congregants and are packed by volunteers. We appreciate any items that are age-appropriate, fun items, items with company logos, kosher individually wrapped food/snack items, etc. Monetary donations are also appreciated. Those funds help us offset the cost of putting together meaningful packages. If you are interested in participating or have any questions, please feel free to contact either one of us.
