Social Justice Goals at Temple B'nai Shalom, On the Environment, are:
1. To raise awareness about our responsibility to be stewards of the environment.
- We hosted a 3-session interfaith workshop taught by GreenFaith. This is the beginning of working with our interfaith neighbors in East Brunswick on specific environmental projects.
- Sponsored an environmental film festival featuring the films "A Crude Awakening" about peak oil, "Who Killed the Electric Car", "Renewal", "Blue Vinyl", and "Everything's Cool."
2. To raise awareness about energy conservation.
- We are promoted the use of Compact Florescent Bulbs through the COEJL campaign called “A Light Among the Nations.”
3. To raise awareness about climate change.
- We hosted a brunch with a featured speaker trained by Al Gore. She provided many creative ideas for individuals to take to conserve energy, reduce waste, and save money.
4. To green our own synagogue building. By practicing what Reform Judaism teaches us, our goal is to protect the environment by reducing waste, saving energy, and reducing building operating costs. To accomplish these goals, we have:
- established a Temple B'nai Shalom Green Team
- had an energy audit done by GreenFaith (www.greenfaith.org)
